What is insomnia?

Insomnia is a symptom of a sleeping disorder characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep despite the opportunity.  By definition, insomnia is "difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, or both" and it may be due to inadequate quality or quantity of sleep. It is typically followed by functional impairment while awake. Insomniacs have been known to complain about being unable to close their eyes or "rest their mind" for more than a few minutes at a time.

Natural Remedies for Insomnia

Avoid stressful activities or vigerous exercise at least 2 hours before bedtime.

Avoid caffeine, alcohol and nicotine.

Keep a regular bedtime and wake up schedule.

Avoid television prior to sleep as it stimulates the brain.

Eat evening meal several hours before retiring to bed.

Avoid night time snacks.

Try journaling to empty your mind of troubling or energetic thoughts.

Listen to white noise or relaxing music.
